Week 22 ● Public Service Broadcasting- Spitfire

The band Public Service Broadcasting consists of members J. Willgoose Esq., Wrigglesworth and JF Abraham. After starting on his own in 2009, Willgoose teamed up with Wrigglesworth in 2010. JF Abraham joined in 2017.

What really sets the group apart is the unique style of music. Combining alternative artrock with samples of public broadcasts. The reason they don't sing is because Willgoose said "singing is never going to work. I'm not going to be happy with it, I'm not going to be comfortable playing it to other people."

When having to choose pre-existing lyrics to create music around, the music should capture the essence of the message. In my opinion they succeeded best when creating the album "the race for space" and the song of the week "spitfire"

The narrative tells the story of the designer of the Spitfire aircraft, British inventor R J Mitchell. What really comes through in this song is the internal conflict of guilt and pride for his invention.

Mostly guitar and drums accompany the broadcast vocals. The combination of the narrative and the instrumentals swell as they make their way to the end of the song.

Instead of decorating music with a speech or a celebrity quote, Public Service Broadcasting chose to write music that compliments charming and relevant broadcasts from our past. The brilliance is in the idea as much as it is in the execution of that idea.
