Week 32 ● The Arcs - Lake Superior

Like most of us, The Arcs frontman Dan Auerbach, was struck by disbelief when watching the Netflix show 'Making a Murderer'. For those of you who don't know, the show tells the story of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who wrongfully served 18 years in prison for a sexual assault he didn’t commit.

Four years after Avery's exoneration, he was convicted for the murder of Theresa Halbach and sentenced to life in prison. Shaky evidence, forced confessions and targeted hatred towards Avery from the community and the police force make it easy to doubt the conviction.

That controversial nature of the case was enough for Auerbach and the Arcs to write a song about. The story was translated into the lyrics and then drenched in that psychedelic bluesrock sound.

“We live in troubled times,'” the band wrote in a statement on Soundcloud. “Last week, we got a sneak peek at what goes on behind the curtains of our criminal justice system. A few sleepless nights later we gathered in the studio and wrote this song.” According to the band’s note, “Lake Superior” was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered in only two days.

Lyrics outtake:

'On a stretch of sand, sweet northern breeze
Manitowoc put Avery on the beach
Your alibi will never do
When the whole town's got it out for you'
